Short downtime
SL Commerce Manager was down for about 20 minutes this morning, starting just before noon SL time, April 26th. I was notified by an automated email and I brought the system back up manually. I’ll review the logs to see what might have caused it, but the system is once again operating normally.
When I brought the system back online, I created two web instances, instead of the single instance that I’d been using up to this point. Having two instances is essentially a load-balanced environment. When you connect to SL Commerce Manager, you’ll connect to one of two web front-ends, and during your interaction with the system, you might move from one system to the other based on current system load. This all happens transparently; you won’t even notice it taking place, but the benefit is increased system capacity.
The other benefit of a dual web instance system is that if one web front-end happens to go down, users will continue to operate against the other web instance until the failed unit can be restored. This will reduce, if not prevent, future downtime from causes like this morning’s issue.
